  Ghana win keeps Africa buzzing

Milovan Rajevac has hailed Ghana’s win which represents the first by an African side at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

In earlier three games, involving African sides, hosts South Africa, Nigeria and Algeria all failed in their quest to register victories, managing a draw and two defeats in that order their opening matches.

So, it was up to Ghana to deliver the goods for Africa. And Milovan Rajevac’s side did not disappoint the continent as the Black Stars ensured that a team from the continent got off to a great start. Ghana beat Serbia 1-0 on Sunday in Pretoria to give an expectant continent plenty to cheer with the Black Stars scoring through Asamoah Gyan from a spot kick in the second half.

“We are happy that an African team has beaten a good European team and we hope that the whole of Africa is celebrating the continent’s first win in the 2010 World Cup,” Rajevac told a post-match news conference.

“It was a very difficult match and a clash of contrasting styles, so I have to congratulate my players for a valiant effort because they kept going until the end,” he added.

Goal scorer on the day, Gyan also relishes the moment.

“I think the whole of Africa will relish what the Black Stars did today.”
