Scrabbles

Scrabble Association of Ghana (SCAG)
Founded in 1990, SCAG is the official organisation responsible for the promotion and development of the SCRABBLE® game in Ghana. SCAG is also responsible for overseeing the activities of official clubs, organisation of scrabble tournaments and dissemination of SCRABBLE® news in Ghana. SCAG is, in addition, a resource centre for players, scrabble enthusiasts, the media and general public. It promotes and manages Ghana's participation in both competitive and friendly international scrabble competitions such as the World Scrabble Championship (WSC) and African Scrabble Championship (ASC). SCAG maintains a ratings system which incorporates results from rated tournaments across the country every year. This provides an accurate indication of the relative strengths of all regular tournament players.

Local Scrabble Tournaments

SCAG has successfully organised an average of eight (8) major open tournaments including the National Scrabble Championships annually. These tournaments including the National Scrabble Championship annually. These tournaments attract players from all over the country, as well as the Grandmasters’ tourneys which attract the best scrabble players in a particular year.

In the past SCAG received sponsorships from reputable companies such as Pioneer Tobacco Company Ltd. (PTC), Unilever Ghana Ltd., SOFT Computers Ltd., Ghana Breweries Ltd., Media Majique and Research Systems Ltd., Nestle Ghana Ltd., Kumasi Brewery Ltd., Mac and Mei Ltd. and Mobil Ghana Ltd for the organisation of local tournaments. These sponsorships were as a result of recognition of the good organisation of the game in the country and the potential educational benefits that the game of Scrabble could offer to children and adults alike.

SCAG is fully recognized affiliate member of the National Sports Council.

There are currently over 100 professional scrabble players and several amateur players in Ghana.

SCAG has been reorganised and the new management is putting structures in place to strengthen the development of the word game and enhance Ghana's international ranking through effective organisation, management and development of SCRABBLE® in the country. The new management took office in January 2003.
